Block Hole

Released by Konami in 1989, *Quarth* is a highly original arcade game that fuses puzzle and shooter mechanics. Set in the year 199X, the Earth is in crisis as "Quarth"—massive, fragmented objects created by a collapse in universal gravitational equilibrium—approach the planet. Players control their ship, the "Din-Don," and must fire projectiles into the irregular blocks pushing down from the top of the screen to form rectangles and clear them away. Success requires both precise strategy and quick reflexes, as players must identify the weakness of the Quarth: they only break apart when formed into perfect rectangles.

In 199X, a collapse of gravitational equilibrium in outer space caused matter that failed to form into new stars to transform into "Quarth," a massive, fragmented entity. The object is now encroaching upon Earth while consuming everything in its path. At a research laboratory, humanity discovered that the weakness of Quarth is its tendency to disintegrate when formed into a perfect square, and has launched a combat rocket to counter the threat.
