Exerion

Released by Jaleco in 1983, this arcade shooter is distinguished by its unique inertia-based movement system. Set in the year 2991 of the Space Century, players pilot the advanced fighter EX to face the threat posed to the Blue Galaxy by the Zorni forces. Combat requires the mastery of an 8-way joystick and two different beam buttons; a key strategic element is that the limited-ammo single beam is replenished by scoring hits with the dual beam. In the bonus stages, players can replenish their ammunition by destroying all enemies. However, it is a well-known piece of arcade lore that if a red enemy is accidentally included in the destruction, the required quota changes and the bonus is withheld—a specific quirk of the original hardware that is still discussed by fans today.
