Released by Jaleco for arcades in 1984, Formation Z is a side-scrolling shooting game. In the year 2701, responding to a crisis involving rebels based on the planet Xanac, the Earth Federation deploys the unfinished transformable combat mecha, "Ixpel." As pilot Lieutenant Claudia Ixperina, players must strategically switch the mecha between its robot and fighter forms to navigate the environment and destroy the mobile fortress, Zizzariam. The game offers a highly strategic experience, utilizing an eight-way joystick for movement alongside two buttons dedicated to pulse lasers and jumping.

In the year 2701, the Earth Federation suffered a devastating blow due to a rebellion by the 9th Special Armored Division of the Federation Army, which was based on the planet Xanac. To counter the enemy's special weapons, the Earth Federation decided to deploy the "IXPEL," a variable combat mech that had been under top-secret development. The player pilots the IXPEL and launches a mission with the goal of destroying the enemy's mobile fortress, Zizilliam.
