Description

Released by Capcom in 1985, Commando is a hardcore vertically scrolling action-shooter that follows the battle of "Super Joe," a lone commando who infiltrates enemy lines. The game is defined by the exhilarating "brute force" style of play, where players must overwhelm enemies with machine guns and grenades while constantly on the move. Although the game is structured as a four-stage loop, it features a surprising level of depth with enemy configurations that change with each successive loop. Please note that the original hardware contains certain spelling errors and display specifications from the time of development; we believe these quirks are a part of the history of early arcade gaming. On the original machine, it was possible to enter test mode by pressing the fire button while the startup message was displayed.

Story

Deep in the heart of a secluded jungle, a fierce guerrilla war is unfolding. "Super Joe," a soldier who has undergone special training, heads into the battlefield with a top-secret mission to destroy the enemy headquarters and annihilate an evil army that threatens the world. He must take on a brutal, solitary fight against an impregnable fortress where many prisoners are being held captive.
