Jackal

Released by Konami in 1986 for arcades, this action shooter depicts the battles of the "Jackal" special forces as they undertake grueling military missions. Players drive an armored jeep, utilizing machine guns and hand grenades to infiltrate enemy territory, rescue prisoners, and conduct acts of sabotage. Supporting two-player simultaneous play, the game features a central strategic mechanic where your weaponry upgrades across four levels based on the number of prisoners rescued. While the character sprites and staging were considered small-scale for the time, the game succeeds in capturing the tension of the battlefield and the sense of accomplishment that comes with completing a rescue mission.

In 19XX, military personnel from a peaceful nation were kidnapped by a hostile country plotting a dictatorship. The "Jackal," a special forces unit composed of four elite soldiers hardened by grueling training, was ordered to rescue the prisoners and destroy the enemy headquarters. Climbing into their armored jeeps, they charge into the heart of enemy territory to carry out their mission of rescuing hostages and dismantling enemy facilities.
